DPA’s new Reference Standard microphones, specified by sound designer Mick Potter and supplied by Amber Technology to Melbourne production company System Sound, are being used on the Australian production of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-awaited sequel to The Phantom of the Opera.

Love Never Dies continues the story of the Phantom, moving from Paris to Phantasma, a fabulous, early 20th century showground in Coney Island, New York - home to freaks and entertainers. It opened in late May at the Regent Theatre, Melbourne.

The 21-piece orchestra is miked with a selection of DPA mics including the new 4011A and 4011C cardioid mics from DPA’s new Reference Standard series, plus 4007 omnis across brass, woodwind & percussion. For the string section, Potter has chosen a combination of 4011As and 4011Cs as ambient mics and 4061 omni miniatures for close miking, with a 4099B instrument clip mic used on double bass.  
 
All 36 cast members are miked with DPA 4061 miniatures, with the principals wearing two each with dual transmitters and receivers.
 
“The orchestra sound is amazing and the overall sound of the show is very impressive,” says sound supervisor Shelly Lee. “I’m particularly impressed with the cello and bass sound as these instruments can be the most challenging to amplify. I would choose to use DPA microphones whenever possible.”

For the past 2 years, Broadcast and Pro Audio engineers have been moving away from peak level normalization and towards new, loudness-based solutions. In April 2011, another important step was taken when ITU-R upgraded its BS.1770 standard to BS.1770-2.

The first version of BS.1770 focused on ambiguous speech detection, which can have unexpected consequences when trying to control the level of commercials or programs of certain genres. The improved 1770-2 recommendation incorporates a clever relative gate, making the measurement well-defined and practical to use across genres. It is also now relevant for controlling the level of promos and commercials.

In addition, the new version is completely open-standard - a result of  TC Electronic donating core technology to EBU, where it was refined by PLOUD and then brought back into the revised ITU standard.

Now, TC Electronic has updated their Radar Loudness Meters in the System 6000 MkII (V5.11), DB4 MkI & MkII (V3.20), DB8 MkI & MkII (V3.20), LM2 (V1.11), TM7 & TM9 TouchMonitors (V1.14) and LM5D for ProTools HD (V2) to comply with BS.1770-2.

Besides BS.1770-2 measurement compatibility, these systems also feature dedicated EBU R128, TR-B32 and ATSC A/85 metering presets.

Currently, smooth and BS.1770-2 compliant loudness correction is available with TC's DB4, DB8, DB4 MkII & DB8 MkII and their DB2 will get the capability within the coming few months.

The new ’CPU2’ board makes it possible to use the ’Preview’ DVI out and a ’Test’ DVI in located on the CPU board as a 100% functional plus Input and plus Output. So from now the FR-16, FR-32, FR-64 frames have new names: FR-17, FR-33, FR-65. Together with the new FR-9 they form a new standard in digital signal transmission. The FR33 exists in a ’mission critical’ redundant ’R’ version too. The FR-65 is available just in redundant version.

4000 Series

The Reference Standard 4000 Series builds and improves on DPA’s Compact & Standard 4006, 4011, 4015 & 4017 mics, making a wide selection of capsules available at different price points and performance demands. Three brand new preamplifiers feature several enhancements compared to previous designs:

• The MMP-A  ultra-transparent transformerless preamp with active drive for impedance balancing.
• The MMP-B  preamp with low cut and high boost filters.
• The 45mm compact MMP-C preamp with a softer character.

The range’s modular design allows any microphone within the series to be transformed into a new variant. In addition, owning several capsules will be more cost effective than the expense of purchasing complete mics. As with all DPA products, the entire manufacturing process takes place at the company’s purpose-built factory in Denmark.

2000 Series

Also new to the range are pioneering new Twin Diaphragm Capsules which form the Reference Stand 2000 Series and bring the cost DPA quality within reach of a much wider audience.

The MMC2006 omni and MMC2011 cardioid capsules are rooted in the design technology of DPA’s classic miniature capsules. The 2006 encapsulates two opposite-facing 4060 omnidirectional miniature diaphragms to form a single-capsule, dual-diaphragm design, reducing noise and enhancing sensitivity. The 2011 also benefits from DPAs interference tube design experience. These models reflect the sound qualities of DPA’s classic 4006 omni and 4011 cardioid microphones but at a significantly lower price point.

Reference Standard Accessories

Innovative accessories increase versatility and allow for future upgrades or new applications. For example, a ground-breaking new DPA cable accessory features a super-slim XLR connector that adds extremely little length and forms an elegant spot microphone for suspension on a TV set or a live stage. A modular, carbon fibre stereo mounting bar is equipped with Rycote® Lyres™ to position mics stably at the desired angle for any stereo recording. This mounting device can also be screwed into a gooseneck for mounting inside a piano, or connected directly to a camera stand. Adjustable and modular, this innovative new mounting device is as flexible as the mic range itself.

“We never thought it would be possible to obtain such quality at this price, but with the 2000 Series we have managed to create a range with the exceptional sound quality people associate with DPA," said company co-founder Morten Stove. “Our miniatures have been used for years for instruments and concert recordings, and we have taken them a step further, refining them and building them into regular microphones. Major Reference Standard  Features:

• Cardioid and Wide Cardioid capsules can now handle 139 dB(A) before reaching 1% THD; the max SPL handling is increased to 159 dB (A) when using the MMP-A preamp and 152 dB for the MMP-C compact preamp respectively.
• The 4006 Omni now handles 4dB more SPL before reaching 1% THD; max SPL handling is increased to 147 dB for the MMP-A preamp and 140 dB for the MMP-C preamp. The dynamic range is an impressive 121 dB – ready for 24 bit HD resolution.
• CMRR (RF rejection) has been improved to >60 dB, >50 dB and >40 dB for amplifiers MMP-A, MMP-B and MMP-C respectively. Adding a transformer to the circuit could have increased this further, but for sound quality reasons it was decided to choose Impedance Balancing with Active Drive technology.

The Reference Standard mics take DPA’s Standard and Compact ranges a step further, building on the company’s reputation for clear, transparent and precise sound and improving on the classic mics known and loved the world over. According to Radial’s president, Peter Janis: “The H-Amp is one of those products that had unfortunately been 'backburnered' pending completion of other projects. Several of our professional touring customers have been waiting on this product release. They can see the merit of being able to take a speaker feed and quickly convert it so that it can feed a headphone. Well the wait is over..."

The H-Amp is a rugged device equipped with two Neutrik Speakon connectors. One of these can take the output from a monitor wedge or side fill and automatically convert the high level loudspeaker signal to a mono feed for headphones. The second Speakon provides a throughput to feed additional H-Amps for studio use or on concert stages where multiple members of an orchestra may need a headphone feed.

The H-Amp also features dual outputs to enable two musicians to share the same feed. Each output is equipped with a separate level control and a 3-band filter set can be inserted into one of the headphone outs to tailor the signal for different types of headphones.

Like all Radial products, the H-Amp is designed to endure the abuse of professional touring. 14 gauge steel construction throughout provides excellent shielding and Radial’s I-Beam internal frame ensures the PCB assembly remains stress free. The innovative “book-end” casing design provides a protective barrier around the switches, controls & connectors further lengthening lifespan whilst a full non-slip base pad provides both mechanical isolation and electrical insulation.

Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of professional digital & analogue consoles, chose the recent Frankfurt Musikmesse exhibition to launch their new X-Panda, a versatile 24-channel compact SuperAnalogue™ mixer.

Building on the success of their highly-acclaimed X-Desk, the X-Panda is a new small- format analogue mixer aimed at project studio owners and packs typically pristine SSL audio quality and a versatile feature set into its remarkably compact frame.

As a standalone product, X-Panda serves as a high quality, 24-input mixer that can be used for tracking (in conjunction with external mic pres) or master mix summing.

In conjunction with an SSL X-Desk, X-Panda introduces 24 additional channels, which via the ‘X-Desk Link’ connection, feed directly into the X-Desk Master Buss, Cue and Aux Send/Return system. In conjunction with an X-Rack summing system (fitted with Master Module), X-Panda adds faders and additional inputs to create an extremely versatile mixer.

The new X-Panda can also be used with any other mixer to expand available channel count.

X-Panda provides 8 x Mono channels (each with Main & Alt inputs for a total of 16 x Mono inputs) plus 4 x Stereo channels to deliver a total of 24 channels at mixdown.

All channels feature an input Level Trim with centre detent at Unity Gain, tri-colour signal indicator LED’s, Phase Invert, Insert and a Direct Channel Output (which can be switched post fader). Each channel also has a Stereo Cue section with dedicated Level & Pan controls. When tracking, this is traditionally used to create a monitor feed to the Stereo Cue Buss Output but on mono channels, Alt buttons flip the Stereo Cue section controls to adjusting the Alt input Level & Pan for mixdown.

Each channel features independent FX1 and FX2 send level controls (globally switched Pre/Post fader), self-illuminated heavy duty Solo & Cut buttons, Pan/Balance controls and precision 100mm faders to complete the channel strip.

The X-Panda also features a Stereo Mix Buss, Stereo Cue Buss and Solo Buss. When linked to an X-Desk, the X-Panda’s Mix Buss & Stereo Cue Buss feed into the respective Busses on the X-Desk. The Solo systems are also linked so that soloing any channel mutes all other channels on all linked units. Similarly, when an X-Panda is linked to an X-Desk (with Master Module fitted) the Mix, Cue & Solo Busses are also Linked.

It’s possible to cascade up to eight X-Desk and X-Panda units using the ‘X-Desk Link’ system, enabling very high channel count systems to be configured.

When used as a standalone unit, the X-Panda’s main Mix Buss and FX Busses are set to sum at unity gain enabling it to act as a summing mixer without the need for Master Level controls.

More Redundancy

With several thousand units operating constantly all over the world, there is plenty of proof that the original DB4 & DB8 processors rarely fail. On the other hand, live broadcasting always calls for the ultimate level of ‘operational safety’, so TC have ensured  that the DB4 & DB8 MKII will never be without power. Owners get the same power supply as the original units - but now there are two of them. There are also double the fuses, mains inlets and even the Swiss-made Papst fans. If one of the power supplies should fail, the other will take over instantly, and the power supplies can even be fed from independent power sources.

More Compatibility

4X CAT-6 Extender for HDMI

This single rack-mounted extender can be combined with any Gefen 4x4 matrix product. It extends all four connected outputs over CAT-6 cable up to 200 feet (60m) to the remote HDTV displays, streamlining any installation that requires HDTV displays in different locations. One CAT-6 cable placed between the sender and receiver unit(s) delivers 1080p full HD with 3DTV, multi-channel audio, Gefen's FST (Fast Switching Technology), IR remote,

RS-232 and IP control. The sender includes four sender units in a one rack-mount solution that can fit next to any mounted 4x4 matrix system. Four individual receiver units connect the displays to the sender.

8X CAT-6 Extender for HDMI

This companion extender for Gefen 8x8 matrix products allows all eight connected outputs to be extended up to 200 feet (60 m) from the sources using one CAT-6 cable per display. One CAT-6 cable transmits 1080p full HD video with 3DTV, multi-channel audio, FST (Fast Switching Technology), IR remote, RS-232 and IP control signals from the selected source (connected to the matrix) to the remote destination (display). The sender includes eight sender units in a one rack-mount solution for convenient access to the matrix system. Eight individual receiver units connect the displays to the sender.

LAS VEGAS | January  2011 | Optoma® Technology, Inc., the world’s #1 selling brand of DLP® projector,  will feature here at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, its breakthrough 3D-XL, the  first converter box that lets 720p 3D DLP projectors play 1080p 3D Blu-ray disks. As with all single projector 3D systems, active 3D glasses are required.
 

“The 3D-XL is an important product for the market right now,” said Jon Grodem,senior director of product and marketing for Optoma. “It gives a large installed base a way to embrace 3D life without having to make a new, expensive investment.”

According to Grodem, the 3D-XL converts the HDMI 1.4A signal found in 1080p 3D players and down converts it to an HDMI 1.3 signal that current 720p 3D DLP projectors – those that operate at 120 Hz. – can understand and display in 3D.

The 3D-XL supports multiple 3D inputs, with two HDMI 1.4A inputs, 1 USB port and 1 RS232 port, and can accept common global video inputs and video formats up to 1080p (HDTV, EDTV, SDTV, NTSC, PAL, SECAM).

Demonstrating that SSL continues to lead the way with broadcast audio products that deliver streamlined workflow and outstanding value, the new C-Play embeds a fully functional spot and music playout system into their digital broadcast console range.

The HDMI inputs on Onkyo A/V receivers let you simultaneously connect high-def sources such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. A pristine video signal can then be output to a connected high-resolution display. As implemented by Onkyo, HDMI 1.4a also enables 3D video and an Audio Return Channel. 3D video is the next big thing in home entertainment, with 3D-compatible TVs and 3D-related movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase*. The Audio Return Channel, meanwhile, allows audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner to be sent “upstream” to a connected A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.

Rising Sun Pictures has a vast portfolio including the Harry Potter series, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Australia and Superman Returns to name but a few.

Rising Sun Pictures’ DI Colourist, Alex Meddick, who has worked on a number of high profile features including the Harry Potter series, used Nucoda Film Master’s standard toolset to grade the majority of Red Dog. The comprehensive grading tools were used to achieve the appropriate look set up by Director (Kriv Stenders) and Cinematographer (Geoffrey Hall).

Michael Taylor, Rising Sun Pictures’ CEO, explains, “When we installed our Nucoda Film Master DI grading suite including Nucoda Compose we invested a significant amount of R&D to set up the technical aspects of the pipeline including identifying all new formats of delivery and acquisition as well digital cinema deliverables. This ensures the best image quality from start to finish by understanding the nature of the images acquired.”

Red Dog, was directed by Kriv Stenders and shot entirely in Australia. Daniel Taplitz adapted the Louis de Bernières (Captain Corelli's Mandolin) RED DOG novel. The film is produced by Woss Group Film Productions and distributed by Roadshow Films. The plot is based on the Australian legendary true story of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master.

Meddick has also recently used Nucoda Film Master to grade The Dragon Pearl, a film shot entirely in China under the new Australia-Chinese co-production treaty. It is a Mario Andreacchio film produced by AMPCO Films and Hengdian World Studios. It tells the story of a young boy, John (Louis Corbett) who travels to China to visit his father, Dr Chase (Sam Neill) on an archaeological dig and inadvertently discovers a real-life Chinese dragon.

Taylor concludes, “Prior to installing the Nucoda Film Master we didn’t have a real-time grading solution in a full 4k-capable cinema. This allows an entire film to be acquired, finished and viewed in a cinematic environment with 7.1 surround sound. The system has a full feature set with an extensive physical control service to allow efficient and dynamic workflows to be built with filmmakers. We’ve also tested Nucoda Film Master’s Open EXR functionality for use within our VFX pipeline. The benefits are a higher dynamic range in the image and the ability to avoid the need to reprocess images by using our native internal linear to light colour space. This shows great potential and we look forward to seeing how it develops with the aim to use it in the grading/DI pipeline.”

Remote Recorders, a high-end mixing facility based in Sydney, has recently stepped up its control room with a new Solid State Logic C200 HD Digital Production Console.

The studio, which features a large, well-equipped control room with associated overdub/vocal booth, mixes live presentations for content providers including iTunes Australia, Abbey Road Studios’ Abbey Road Live Here Now, and music television channels such as Channel [V], Music Max and the Country Music Channel. The C200 allows the studio to handle all post production duties, while delivering a digital version of SSL’s industry standard ergonomic interface.

“Remote Recorders is one of Australia's foremost specialists in live music audio production and post-production for radio, television, DVD and instant delivery,”  commented Cameron McCauley, director of Remote Recorders. “We had a very successful run over the years with an SSL 4000 series console, but the time had come where we needed to move into a digital console with more capacity. TC has released a new V4.3.3 software upgrade for their PowerCore PCI MkII, Express, Unplugged, Compact, FireWire, X8 and 6000. This latest software package substantially enhances general system stability and includes a number of other minor fixes.

The intent is simple: smaller studios need to switch between various studio monitors and a sub woofer. There are many controllers on the market. But most are expensive or worse yet, they colour the sound of the audio signal.

The new Radial MC3 is a passive device that switches the signal without introducing any circuitry. The power connection is used to toggle the internal relays, turn on some LED's, sum the input to mono for the sub woofer and, of course, power up the headphones.

How do you use it? Easy… connect your source (recorder or computer audio output) to the stereo inputs. Then connect your two sets of monitors to outputs A and B. Usually, folks start by recording using smaller monitors and then test with bigger ones. The sub can also be turned on separately.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – A Solid State Logic AWS 948 Hybrid Console/Controller was chosen to upgrade Studio R103, the main audio recording facility on the Fairfield Campus of the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT). The Institute offers in-depth vocational training in all aspects of audio production through its Sound Production certificate program. The AWS 948 provides the sound quality, industry standard ergonomic layout and DAW control capabilities that make it the perfect fit for an educational setting.

“The highlight of the recently-upgraded Studio R103 is certainly the SSL AWS 948,” says Darren Steffen, program coordinator, Sound Production, Department of Performing Arts, NMIT. “The console interfaces beautifully with our Pro Tools® HD and Logic systems, as well as the bevy of deluxe outboard equipment we offer. The decision to upgrade an aging analogue console to the SSL was thoroughly challenging, but in the end, obvious. Our pool of experienced teaching staff has much experience using SSL in the workplace and, for many, there is no acceptable alternative console available. Since our students will more than likely encounter SSL in their professional lives at the more high-end production facilities, the AWS 948 is ideal for our application.”

The Studio R103 control room can accommodate a class of 20 students, and employs an overhead camera above the mixing console to provide clear demonstrations to the larger groups. The associated studio room offers a recording room and attached grand piano and drum/vocal booths, with the main studio room substantial enough to handle a big band or small film orchestra. NMIT’s IT infrastructure allows transfer of data between any computer-based sound production workstation throughout the campus and the SSL console, making inter-discipline projects possible.

“The premiere project we produce at NMIT Performing Arts is the Collaboration Project,” continues Steffen. “Music performance students write original material, sound production students record it, TV students shoot the video and the music business students manage the process and produce a DVD as the final product. For all students involved, this becomes a key reference source when presenting to prospective employers. The sonic excellence of the AWS has made a remarkable improvement in the sound quality of this project and there is no doubt this sonic excellence will ensure that future Collaboration Projects will be the best ever produced.”

NMIT believes that building professional working relationships among students also creates excellent outcomes by consolidating clear working practices toward producing a commercial product. This process builds networks that extend beyond study life into working careers. The AWS enhances this development.

You spoke and TC Helicon listened. Since they released VoiceLive Play in January it has become one of our most popular units, and they've  had tons of feedback from users how to improve the functionality of it and its big brother, VoiceLive Play GTX. The requests have been many but most have revolved around adding more control, more looping time, and more presets to the machine. So, they've done just that.

More presets
A whopping 500 new presets awaits in our biggest preset pack ever. Covering all styles and genres, it should be enough to keep any singer happy for a long, long time. Discover your sound via the songs you like, or go on a random walk of presets for inspiration.

More looping
Everyone likes to loop, so we’ve expanded the original 15 seconds of looping to a full 60 seconds, still with infinite overdubs, of course. Extra looping time requires Mono output mode and “undo” off.

More control
Add a Switch-3 pedal to your VoiceLive Play or Play GTX and you’ve got an entirely different beast at your feet. Direct access to looping, tap tempo, guitar boost (only on Play GTX), on/off control of all effects with momentary options for harmony and delay, custom programming of the footswitches, and more, means no compromise and no holds barred when performing live. With this update adding the Switch-3 makes all the difference.

How to get the update
Just connect your Play unit to your computer via the supplied USB cable and fire up the VoiceSupport app to 1) update the firmware and 2) start draggin’ and droppin’ the presets to your Play or Play GTX unit. Switch-3 is sold separately.

Since the preset pack is so large, we suggest selecting presets individually and moving them to your device.

Free Sound Level Predictor for Live Sound

FOH-engineers are giving "I like" to the Sound Level Predictor PC software. Besides the simple visual display, they love being able to look 10 minutes into the future and see what the sound pressure level is likely to be.

Sound guys are often required to work with a red light showing that local regulation limits have been exceeded. The immediate reaction is to reduce the main gains. This often compromises the quality of the mix at venues with a loud stage sound (drums, monitors) or where the speakers do not have the same frequency response when sound levels are reduced.

Maintaining the Quality of the Mix

The Sound Level Predictor gives the FOH-engineer a heads-up in case sound levels could exceed the limits within the next 10 minutes. This allows enough time to adjust individual levels and frequencies while maintaining the quality of the mix.

A quick glance at the graphic display shows the state-of-play so the sound guy learns how quickly the level is approaching the limit. The Sound Level Predictor thus seeks to work "with" the FOH-engineer rather than being "the red light that I hate".

The XL2 Acoustic Analyzer offers Speech Intelligibility (STIPA) measurements according to the latest IEC standard for verifying speech intelligibility of voice evacuation systems. New XL2 features, like averaging multiple STIPA results and ambient noise correction further increase measurement efficiency. This allows acoustic consultants and installers to emulate crowded conditions while measuring STIPA onsite in an empty room, and immediately see the effect that the crowd noise has on the STI values.

All Relevant Standard Editions Supported The XL2 firmware Version 2.50 measures STIPA according to the IEC 60268-16 (2011, edition 4.0) standard for verifying speech intelligibility of voice evacuation systems. IEC editions 2.0 (1998) and 3.0 (2003) are also supported. Both STI (Speech Transmission Index) and CIS (Common Intelligibility Scale) values are provided.
Ambient Noise Correction Ambient noise created by the public influences the speech intelligibility. Measuring this speech intelligibility while the public is present, e.g. train stations or airports, is often not feasible because the STIPA measurement requires that a dedicated test signal be played repeatedly through the PA system at the announcement level, which would be annoying to the public. In such circumstances the recommended process is: First measure the typical or worst case ambient noise during day time.
Then later when the venue is empty (at night for example) play the STIPA test signal and measure the speech intelligibility. The XL2 Analyzer corrects the STIPA result automatically with the ambient noise that was measured earlier and provides speech intelligibility values that can be expected with crowds present. The PA system can then be optimized for better speech intelligibility as required. In this manner the XL2 Analyzer provides speech intelligibility values at realistic emergency conditions. This is important, as voice evacuation systems with good speech intelligibility may help to save lives.
Averaging Multiple STIPA Measurements The standard IEC60268-16 recommends taking the average of three or more subsequent measurements at the same location. Multiple measurements increase accuracy and the reliability of the readings. The XL2 Analyzer offers such averaging of STIPA results, calculating both the arithmetic mean value and the statistical deviation.

Distribute video to multiple displays in series using Video Over IP techniques with Gefen's new Daisy Chain HD System. Connect up to 30 displays using CAT-5e cables in a daisy chain mode going from one display to the next, and up to 100 displays when using a combination of Daisy Chaining and Tree Topology distribution.

The system utilizes three modules: The Sender, which connects to the HD source, the Splitter module, which connects to the Sender unit using a CAT-5e cable, and the Receiver unit which connects via CAT-5e cable to the Sender or Splitter, and via HDMI cable to the display. The Splitter unit also has an HDMI output to connect a display.

The Sender, Splitter, and Receiver units simplify extension of HDMI and control signals to create an elaborate network of displays with the ability to route IR-control back from each display location to the source. RS-232 commands can also be distributed over this daisy-chained network to execute commands such as turning all displays on or off. Each CAT-5e cable between the Source, Splitter, and Receiver units can be extended up to 330 (100 meters). Up to 100 Hi-Def displays at resolutions up to 1080p Full HD and 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) are possible. A low latency of less than a frame assures that all displays reproduce audio and video in perfect sync. This easy-to-install and easy-to-expand system is a great fit for Digital Signage applications and also for commercial entertainment solutions (such as in bars, restaurants, and stores) that play back the same content using multiple screens.

How It Works

Connect a Hi-Def source to the Sender unit's HDMI input. If IR-control of the source device is required, connect an IR emitter to the Sender unit's IR Out port and attach it to the IR sensor window of the source. Connect a CAT-5e cable from the Sender unit to the Splitter or Receiver unit. Connect an HDTV display to the HDMI output of the Splitter or Receiver unit. If IR is used, connect a Gefen IR Extender module to the IR Ext port on the Receiver or Splitter unit and place it in a location that has a line-of-sight access from the display location. To control the source, simply point the IR remote of the source unit to the IR Extender module. If using the Splitter unit, and the HDMI needs to be routed to more displays, connect up to two CAT-5e cables from the Splitter unit to additional Splitters or Receiver units.

Note: RS-232 control parameters such as baud rate and addressing mode can be set via hyper terminal RS-232 commands sent through a computer to the RS-232 port of the Sender unit. Confirmation for each RS-232 command will appear on the computer screen. Pressing and immediately releasing the EDID button on each Splitter and Receiver will display the address and baud rate of both the Sender and that unit.

LoudnessWizard^TM – One Algorithm to Rule Them All

DB6 is like having a Plug & Play solution to Loudness.  The LoudnessWizard algorithm will take care of loudness correction, up-conversion from stereo to surround formats and down-conversion from surround to stereo. There is no need to know every detail of the inner workings of loudness standards – apply the LoudnessWizard algorithm and let it combine and properly chain together multiple processes on the fly and without any latency penalty. Once configured, it can literally be left alone to work its wonders effectively as well as transparently; though the user also may let it know if a program has already been normalized or processed.

Introducing more industry-first solutions, the LoudnessWizard algorithm is able to automatically detect the nature of any incoming signal and act accordingly as defined by the engineer. We're not going to bore you with tons of yapping, but know two things: 1. We are truly grateful for all the passion and love you guys have shown the Editor. 2. The TonePrint Editor is insanely intuitive, but just for good measure, we've made the rest of the newsletter a quickstart guide that ... you're not even reading anymore, are you? Just wanna get the Editor? Well, go on then! Enjoy!

TonePrint Templates   Going from a handful of knobs on a pedal to a screen full of sliders can be a bit tricky, we know. For this reason we added the Template TonePrints. These allow you to load a base TonePrint and start building on your own tweaks without having to start from scratch completely. These templates are great for sketching out quick ideas, infusing your own taste and personality into the tone you like as well as getting an idea of what the characteristics for different effect types really are. Did you get carried away building TonePrints and now you’re stuck with a TonePrint that doesn't t sound the way you want it to? This is your get-out-of-jail-free card too. One click reloads the template as it was when you started, so you're left with a great base-sound to build on.

Knob Selection (hey, no giggling)   Here, you can assign different functions to knobs, so they control exactly what you want to control. You can even merge 2 or 3 functions into one knob, so you control multiple parameters with one turn. You can assign a range to these knobs as well. The best way we can explain this is to think of the value of a knob ranging from 1 to 100%. That’s cool – but what if my sweet spot lies between 25 and 50% of that value? With the Editor, you decide what range works best for you and you simply assign it to a knob! If it makes sense to you, it is even possible for the knobs to go from 0 % to 100 % and then back to 25 % when turned all the way clockwise. Start out by selecting a knob. Change which parameter you want to assign and manipulate by clicking the corresponding yellow, red or blue dot and choose from the drop-down menu. The position of the knob will be visible as a dot on the Peak Performance graph where you also have the option of changing the usual tapering.

Peak performance On the upper left corner of the editor is a small graphical interface where effect values assigned to the knobs are represented by peaks and valleys. This is the ultimate interpretation of what is happening when you are working on with the knobs within your TonePrint. The interaction between knob position and modifiers can be manipulated from here via a quick and easy dragging motion. If you want to get ultra-precise, you can also click the numbers and add a numerical value manually, but this is a great way to interpret what is going on with a setting without having to relate to numbers.

Slide into tonal bliss   Along the right hand side of the editor are parameters that allow you to determine the different values of the effect that make up your TonePrint. This is the window that will be most familiar to guitarists and this is where you control the basic functions of the pedal. It’s a cool, slider-based menu with a ‘what you see is what you get’ approach – change a value and they alter the sound, something you can immediately hear via live auditioning. This is basically the heart of your TonePrints, as you set your base sound and essential functions and modifiers here.

Vocal Harmony
With Harmony Singer, users get up to two harmony voices guided directly by the In/Thru guitar connection. In effect, Harmony Singer is the perfect vocal arranger. Mix Engine that Delivers the Benefits of SSL SuperAnalogue Summing and of DAW Mix Automation

SSL are proud to unveil Sigma, the remote controlled analogue mix engine. Designed for the DAW user that seeks the legendary big sound of an SSL console while retaining the convenience of working in the box, Sigma is a unique analogue mix engine in a 2U rack unit, that is remote controlled using MIDI via Ethernet using a DAW or an iDevice compatible software interface. Using proprietary MDAC control technology first featured in our Duality and AWS studio consoles, Sigma’s 100% analogue summing engine can be driven by automation data created within your DAW of choice. Sigma features 16 flexible input channels which can be individually switched between being mono or stereo for up to 32 channels at mixdown. There is accurate front panel LED metering for all channels. There are two stereo mix busses with dedicated outputs for convenient printing of stems back to the DAW and individual stereo insert points to facilitate implementation of parallel compression. Each input channel also features an individual direct output. Mix Bus B can also be injected into Mix Bus A for final mixdown.

An Artist and Studio monitoring section provides a Monitor and Headphone output. The Main monitor output has Main and Alternative connections to accommodate 2 sets of monitors. A comprehensive switching matrix enables selection of your monitor source. A large front panel rotary control uses a push-select mechanism to determine whether it adjusts Mix A, Mix B, Main Monitor or Headphone levels. There is also a Talkback input with adjustable Dim level. Control and switching of a wide range of functions including; monitor level and source, inserts, talkback, sum B>A and mono check, can all be achieved using any standard MIDI hardware control surface. A MIDI learn feature makes setup simple and easy. A pair of user assignable dual action push/hold buttons on the front panel or a foot-switch can also be assigned to the same collection of switching functions. Sigma uses MIDI over Ethernet for control and to connect to a cross platform software interface which provides additional control and setup capability. The software interface enables Sigma to be remote controlled using an iDevice.

Sigma is due to ship in August 2013.
